Our History

The Business Mentors New Zealand (BMNZ) service is owned and operated by the Business In The Community Charitable Trust and was established in 1991 to provide a voluntary mentoring service to New Zealand SME businesses.

The business mentoring service was introduced into New Zealand by Dr Grahame Craig, BMNZ’s current Chairman of Trustees, and was based on the concept of Business In The Community English and European models established in 1979.

From the start, Business In The Community set out to fulfil a major need in New Zealand to assist the owners of SME businesses to survive and grow, and accordingly, to create employment opportunities in urban and rural communities.

Today we have mentored over 65,000 SME businesses including not-for-profit entities and work closely with New Zealand Trade and Enterprise and other government departments, primarily Statistics New Zealand, Inland Revenue Department and Department of Labour.
